Students, congratulations! All of your hard work throughout university has paid off and you will soon be a graduate. It’s almost time to put everything you’ve learnt over the past few years into practice in industry.
We’ve put together some of our best tips for helping you to improve your employability and land your ideal job!
Here are our top 8 tips for improving your employability…
- Add your Certified DriveWorksXpress Associate (CDWXA) certification to your CV and LinkedIn profile. It’s a really quick and easy way to demonstrate the additional effort you’ve put in to gain extra skills outside of your degree that will be useful to employers.
- Don’t worry about how much you know, your attitude is more important. Employers know you still need to learn, your attitude is more important than your ability. Show you’re passionate, have a good work ethic and are willing to learn and you’ll go far.
- Stay up to date with industry news. Read some magazines with cool tech stories, it will give you something to talk about in interviews. DEVELOP3D is one of our favourites and is free online.
- Spend your ‘spare time’ wisely. It takes 10,000 hours to master your craft so use your ‘spare time’ wisely to improve your skills and stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs.
- Have a personal project you’re working on. It will make you more determined to learn more and you’ll be able to talk passionately about it to employers.
- Attend careers events and arrive prepared. Take copies of your CV to hand to employers and remember your appearance and body language are key.
- Get involved in industry events. Look out for industry events near you. SWUG meetings are great to get involved in, you’ll learn topics outside of your degree subject and maybe even meet a prospective employer! There’s usually free beer and pizza too.
- Use your university careers service. Not only can they can help with CV workshops, interview skills and more, they also have list of graduate jobs. Be pro active – check the jobs and apply daily. Research the company and their market and tailor each application.
